Africa has emerged as the fastest-growing tourism region globally in the first half of 2025, recording a 12% increase in international tourist arrivals compared to the same period in 2024, according to the United Nations.

Regional Performance and Key Destinations

North Africa led the continent’s tourism boom with a 14% rise in arrivals, while Sub-Saharan Africa followed closely with an 11% increase, marking one of Africa’s strongest performances since pre-pandemic levels. Key destinations driving this growth include:

  • Morocco: A 19% surge in visitors, fueled by the cultural allure of cities like Marrakech and Fez.
  • South Africa: Kruger National Park and Cape Town continue to attract safari enthusiasts and adventure travelers.
  • Egypt, Kenya, and Tanzania: These countries remain top draws for international visitors, with Kenya’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport reporting significant arrival increases.

Factors Fueling Growth

Several factors have contributed to Africa’s tourism surge:

  • Improved Flight Connectivity: Airlines have introduced more direct routes from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, reducing travel times.
  • Relaxed Visa Policies: Simplified regulations have made it easier for international visitors to access African destinations.
  • Intra-African Travel: Increased regional travel among African citizens is fostering economic integration and boosting local tourism sectors.

Sustainability and Economic Impact

UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili highlighted the sector’s resilience, noting, “The first half of 2025 brought growing arrival numbers and revenues for most destinations, contributing to local economies, jobs, and livelihoods.” He emphasized the need for sustainable and inclusive growth to ensure long-term benefits.

Countries are prioritizing sustainable tourism initiatives, such as eco-friendly lodges and reinvesting safari revenues into conservation efforts. Zanzibar’s beach resorts, like Anantara Zanzibar, continue to draw visitors to East Africa’s coastline, while responsible travel practices are being promoted to protect the environment.

Future Outlook

With tourism revenues climbing, African governments and private investors are focusing on enhancing airports, accommodations, and attractions. Travel experts have ranked Morocco and Zimbabwe among the top countries to visit in 2025, signaling Africa’s growing appeal. Analysts predict that continued infrastructure investments and sustainable practices will solidify Africa’s position as one of the world’s most vibrant tourism regions.
