The French Embassy in Suriname and Guyana partnered with UMA Legal Aid and Marketing and Kelly’s Art to host an engaging event at J.C. Miranda High School (Lyco1) in Paramaribo for International Women’s Day.
A mural symbolizing women’s unity and fight for freedom (green) and dignity (purple) was created by artist Kelly Vorswijk with student volunteers.
Students participated in a historical overview of women’s rights movements presented by Iris Nazir, a lawyer with UMA. Following this, French Ambassador Nicolas de Lacoste spoke about feminist diplomacy and French initiatives.
A key discussion focused on street harassment. An embassy survey revealed that over 80% of students had experienced unwanted advances. A panel discussion featuring a gender equality activist, sociologist, social worker, and police officer addressed the importance of mutual respect and highlighted ways to prevent harassment from escalating into violence.
The day concluded with students creating their own mural reflecting what being a woman means to them today.
