Ndzevane, Eswatini – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) partnered with the Eswatini government to launch a groundbreaking initiative aimed at improving the lives of refugees and the host community. The project centers around the Ndzevane agricultural project, where the government allocated over 1,000 hectares of arable land for refugees and locals to cultivate.
This initiative stems from Eswatini’s commitment at the 2019 Global Refugee Forum (GRF) to provide land for agricultural endeavors. With a target of supporting over 2,600 refugees and host community members, the project seeks to enhance food security, self-reliance, and community participation in the local market.
“The spirit of the GRF is about shared responsibility,” said Her Royal Highness Princess Lindiwe, Eswatini’s Minister of Home Affairs. “We recognize that governments and UNHCR cannot achieve refugee protection alone. This project brings together a diverse range of actors to address these critical issues.”
UNHCR commends Eswatini’s dedication to refugee well-being, highlighting the importance of sustainable livelihood opportunities. “Empowering refugees fosters dignity and resilience,” stated Monique Ekoko, UNHCR Representative for Southern Africa and the Multi-Country Office (SAMCO). “Eswatini’s GRF commitment is a significant step. Now, we urge continued financial and technical support to ensure its success.”
Despite Eswatini’s efforts, challenges remain. Many refugees struggle to find employment and obtain business licenses. Funding cuts further strain resources and hinder project implementation.
“This initiative embodies the GRF’s shared solidarity,” said Igor Ciobanu, UNHCR SAMCO Deputy Representative. “It fosters food security and empowers refugees and the community to build a sustainable future. Continued support is crucial for its long-term success.”
The project seeks additional support from the international community. The launch event included representatives from Chile, Indonesia, Mexico, the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency, Ashraful Aid, and UNCT Eswatini.
