Ambassador Daniel García-Peña Jaramillo has officially begun his diplomatic mission in the United States, presenting his credentials at the U.S. Department of State on July 16, 2024.
During the ceremony, Ambassador García-Peña Jaramillo met with key officials, including Deputy Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs Kevin Sullivan. Discussions focused on the current state of Colombia-US relations, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the strong bipartisan ties that have existed for decades. They also addressed future challenges and areas for collaboration.
Ambassador García-Peña’s appointment follows his ratification by President Gustavo Petro during the inauguration of Colombia’s new Foreign Minister, Luis Gilberto Murillo. García-Peña was named the new Colombian ambassador to the US.
Daniel García-Peña is a seasoned diplomat who boasts an impressive career. He served as High Commissioner for Peace under President Ernesto Samper, Consul in Paris during Juan Manuel Santos’ administration, and professor at prestigious Colombian universities. He graduated as a historian from Belmont Abbey College, North Carolina, United States.
He succeeds Daniel Ávila Camacho, who served as Ambassador since February 2024. Ambassador Ávila had a distinguished diplomatic career with postings across the globe.
