Vienna (PK) – Austria unites in grief over the passing of Brigitte Bierlein, a trailblazing lawyer, constitutional judge, and the first woman to serve as Chancellor of Austria. Bierlein died at the age of 74, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, dedication, and pioneering achievements in public service.

Brigitte Bierlein achieved a series of groundbreaking accomplishments throughout her career. She ascended to the position of Chancellor in June 2019, becoming the first woman to hold this esteemed office. Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen appointed her during a period of political turbulence, and Bierlein’s leadership maintained stability and fostered trust in Austria’s democratic institutions.

Members of the Presidium of the National Council expressed profound sadness at Bierlein’s passing, stressing her impactful contributions to the country according to a statement from Austria’s Parliament.

National Council President, Wolfgang Sobotka praised Bierlein as an “impressive and extraordinary personality,” in tribute to the deceased former Chancellor. “Her death fills me with deep sadness, and my thoughts are with her family in these difficult hours,” Sobotka added.

Second President of the National Council, Doris Bures echoed these sentiments, lauding Bierlein as one of Austria’s most respected constitutional lawyers and the sole female Chancellor to date. Bures noted strongly Bierlein’s courage and sense of duty during Austria’s challenging domestic political period, reflecting the respect and recognition she earned both in life and posthumously.

Third President of the National Council Norbert Hofer also expressed his sorrow, recognizing Bierlein’s impressive contributions to Austrian law and politics. “Her life and work have left an impressive mark,” Hofer stated.

As Austria reflects on the life and legacy of Brigitte Bierlein, people collectively acknowledge her role in shaping the country’s legal and political framework. Her pioneering spirit, dedication to public service, and contributions to Austria’s democratic institutions will continue to inspire future generations.

Brigitte Bierlein’s passing marks the end of an era, but her legacy as a leader for women in leadership and a staunch defender of the rule of law remains indelible. In these moments of mourning, Austria honors the memory of a remarkable leader who devoted her life to the service of her country and its people.
