Carl Hallergard’s Appointment Marks New Era for EU-UN Cooperation in Vienna

Carl Hallergard, the recently appointed EU Ambassador and Permanent Observer for the European Union (EU) in Vienna, is swiftly pushing forward EU collaboration with critical United Nations (UN) agencies. In recent meetings, he has reiterated the EU’s unwavering commitment to the vital work of the UN in Vienna and emphasized the need to bolster partnerships.

Hallergard presented his formal credentials to Ms. Ghada Fathi Waly, who serves as the Director-General of UN Vienna. During this interaction, he restated the EU’s backing for UN initiatives in Vienna and stressed the EU’s determination to enhance cooperation with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

UN Vienna warmly greeted Ambassador Hallergard, acknowledging the pivotal role he plays in fostering cooperation between the EU and the UN in Vienna, addressing significant issues like disarmament, crime prevention, and sustainable development.

In another significant meeting, Hallergard presented his formal credentials to Mr. Gerd Müller, who holds the position of Director-General at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). He underscored the EU’s strong commitment to the UN’s Agenda 2030 and the necessity of fortifying the EU-UNIDO partnership, which plays a central role in global sustainability efforts.

The EU’s partnership with UNIDO spans more than 100 countries on four continents, making a fundamental contribution to global economic growth and sustainability. UNIDO’s technical expertise and facilitation of private-sector cooperation seamlessly align with the EU’s Global Gateway initiative.

Hallergard brings a wealth of experience to his role, having previously served as the EEAS Director for Middle East and North Africa and as Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to the UN and other International Organizations in Geneva. His extensive background positions him effectively to further strengthen EU-UN partnerships in Vienna and beyond.
