China has urged the United States to engage in dialogue to resolve escalating trade tensions that have led to a series of tit-for-tat tariffs between the world’s two largest economies.
Speaking at a weekly news conference on Thursday, Commerce Ministry spokeswoman He Yongqian emphasized China’s commitment to a constructive approach.
“China has always advocated that China and the United States should adopt a positive and cooperative attitude towards differences and controversies in economic and trade fields,” she stated.
Mutual Respect as a Key Condition
While calling for negotiations, He stressed that any communication must be conducted on mutual respect, equality, and mutual benefit.
“Threats and intimidation can only be counterproductive. It is hoped that the United States and China will work together to return to the correct track of resolving issues through dialogue and consultation,” she added.
Trump’s Tariffs and China’s Response
Since returning to office in January 2025, US President Donald Trump has intensified his trade war stance, imposing tariffs on major trading partners, including China, Canada, and Mexico. His administration cited these nations’ alleged failure to curb the flow of fentanyl and precursor chemicals as justification for the new economic measures.
Earlier this month, Trump raised a 10% blanket tariff on Chinese imports to 20%, escalating tensions further.
In retaliation, Beijing imposed tariffs of up to 15% on various US agricultural exports, including soybeans, pork, and chicken—key industries that heavily rely on Chinese markets.
China’s Stand on US Steel and Aluminum Tariffs
As the world’s largest steel producer, China has been particularly affected by US steel and aluminum tariffs. On Wednesday, Beijing vowed to take “all necessary measures” to safeguard its interests in response to Washington’s latest restrictions on metal imports.
The Path Forward
With economic relations between the two superpowers at a critical juncture, Beijing’s call for dialogue presents an opportunity for de-escalation. However, whether the US reciprocates China’s diplomatic overtures remains to be seen, as both sides continue to navigate an increasingly strained economic landscape.
