Colombia National Day, also known as Colombian Independence Day, is celebrated with great enthusiasm across the country on July 20. This day marks the Cry of Independence (El Grito de Independencia) in 1810, a critical moment when calls for autonomy grew strong, eventually leading to Colombia’s independence from Spain. This historic event, inspired by revolutions globally, paved the way for Colombia to become a sovereign State under the leadership of figures like Simón Bolívar.

Colombia’s status as the second most biodiverse country in the world adds a unique dimension to its national identity. The country boasts an astounding variety of landscapes, from the Andes mountains to the Amazon rainforest, Caribbean and Pacific coastlines, and the Orinoco River basin. This natural wealth contributes immensely to Colombia’s transnational role in environmental conservation efforts.

Colombia National Day is an exciting celebration of national pride. The capital city, Bogotá, usually will host a grand military parade featuring various branches of the armed forces, symbolizing unity and national strength. Throughout the country, parades, fireworks, and cultural events showcase the rich and unique culture of the country.

The streets come alive with the sounds of traditional music like cumbia and vallenato. People gather for community events and family gatherings, indulging in Colombian delicacies like arepas, empanadas, and ajiaco. The Colombian flag is displayed with pride everywhere, creating a truly festive atmosphere. There is every likelihood there will be extensive festivities this year since it falls on a Saturday.
