Leaders from 56 member states of the Commonwealth convened on Friday at Marlborough House, the Commonwealth Secretariat’s headquarters, to meet with His Majesty King Charles III in preparation for his Coronation.

The gathering centered on issues of mutual interest, particularly empowering the youth, which is a priority for the Commonwealth in 2023. The King expressed his unwavering support for the Commonwealth’s values, people, and countries, referring to it as a “cornerstone” of his life, as stated by the Commonwealth secretariat.

The meeting, attended by the Commonwealth’s Secretary-General, the Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC, and the President of Rwanda, His Excellency Paul Kagame, who serves as the Chair-in-Office of the Commonwealth, focused on reinforcing the Commonwealth’s commitment to strengthening unity and empowering youth. The event also welcomed the leaders of Togo and Gabon, who attended their first Commonwealth Leaders Meeting.

The Commonwealth reaffirmed its dedication to investing in the 1.5 billion young people across its 56 nations, ensuring that they are equipped with the skills and resources they need to become the leaders of tomorrow. In addition to discussions on empowering youth, the meeting emphasized the importance of continued strengthening of the Commonwealth family, particularly as the organization continues to grow in size, scale, and influence.

As part of the meeting, spouses of Commonwealth leaders met to discuss and champion cervical cancer advocacy, pledging to take action in their respective countries to eliminate the disease. The Commonwealth also marked the tenth anniversary of the signing of the Commonwealth Charter, which aims to promote democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.

With the Year of Youth and Year of Peace being marked in 2023, the Commonwealth is poised to continue its efforts to empower young people and promote peace, while building on its commitment to unity and progress.
