Washington, D.C., March 20, 2025 – Costa Rica has claimed the title of the happiest country in the Americas and secured the sixth spot globally in the 2025 World Happiness Report. This achievement reinforces the country’s reputation for excelling in well-being, quality of life, and sustainable development.
The report, released by the Oxford University Centre for Wellbeing Research, the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network, and Gallup, evaluates factors such as GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity, and corruption levels. Costa Rica’s success is attributed to its strong social systems, low corruption, and the cultural ethos of “Pura Vida,” which embodies optimism and simplicity.
Semafor, in partnership with Gallup and in coordination with the World Happiness Report editorial team, hosted discussions on the report’s key themes, focusing on kindness, generosity, and strategies to enhance social connections and overall wellbeing. These conversations involved representatives from some of the happiest nations, policymakers, and leaders, aiming to explore ways to improve happiness and kindness trends globally.

Costa Rican Ambassador to the United States, Catalina Crespo Sancho, remarked: “this recognition reaffirms Costa Rica’s development model, which prioritizes people’s well-being, the protection of our natural resources, and a supportive society. We take pride in continuing to show the world that progress and happiness can go hand in hand with equity and sustainability,”

Costa Rica’s score rose from 6.955 to 7.274, the best in a decade, reflecting its robust community ties and dedication to environmental conservation. Costa Rica is the sole country in the Americas to break into the global top 10, trailing Nordic countries like Finland, Denmark, and Sweden, which have consistently led the rankings. This accomplishment reflects the country’s efforts to advance social well-being and human development through thoughtful policies.
The World Happiness Report relies on global survey data that assesses life satisfaction on a scale from 0 to 10, alongside measurable factors that shape each country’s happiness levels.

By securing this position, Costa Rica continues to set an example for quality of life worldwide. The country’s focus on peace, education, and environmental sustainability proves essential for fostering well-being.
