The Government of Kuwait has made its position known after the anti-migrant and racial-motivated violence that engulfed Limassol on Friday drew international concern. The foreign minister of Cyprus, Constantinos Kombos, and the head of the Kuwaiti mission in Cyprus, Amb. Abdullah Al-Kharafi, met on Wednesday to address the issues. At the meeting, Amb. Kombos condemned the attack on tourists, including Kuwaiti tourists who were subjected to assault and violent attacks.

After the attack made headlines, the Kuwaiti government wrote a protest letter to the government of Cyprus. In the protest letter, they condemned the attack and called on the Cypriot government to take control of the situation and save Kuwaiti citizens from further attack.

According to Amb. Kombos, it was a “comprehensive meeting”, and a demonstration of the excellent relations between the two countries.

A report made available by the Cypriot Foreign Ministry said that during the meeting, the foreign minister, Kombos, while condemning the attack in Limassol, stated his desire to visit Kuwait in no distant time.

The incident caused a rift in relations between Cyprus and Kuwait until the meeting was held. The meeting demonstrated the desire of the two countries to get back to their earlier bilateral stance.

Cyprus, a tourist destination with about four million tourists annually, made it into the news recently when some violent-ready men in masks, who were waving Cypriot flags and banners urging refugees out of their besieged country, traveled down the seafront in Limassol, where a huge number of migrants set up businesses and attacked them.

Cypriot police have since the incident took place announced the arrest of 13 people, who were alleged to have played a major role in the violent protest and attacks.
