In a significant step towards fostering global collaboration and cultural exchange, Drake University welcomed the distinguished President of Kosovo, Dr. Vjosa Osmani, during her week-long visit to Des Moines on Wednesday. The visit culminated in a special event at Drake University, which not only celebrated the strong bonds between Iowa and Kosovo but also marked the signing of a new academic partnership between Drake and the University of Prishtina in Kosovo.
The visit began with a moderated discussion at the Sheslow Auditorium, attended by over 200 students, faculty, staff, and community members. Professor Debra DaLaet of Drake University led the engaging conversation with President Osmani, highlighting the enduring connections between the United States and Kosovo.
Drake University President Marty Martin played a pivotal role in the day’s events, presenting President Osmani with the prestigious Honorary Global Citizenship Award. This award was bestowed in recognition of President Osmani’s exceptional efforts in advancing global understanding and creating opportunities for international collaboration.
A noteworthy announcement during the event was the unveiling of a brand-new academic cooperation agreement between Drake University and the University of Prishtina in Kosovo. The University of Prishtina, situated in the capital city of Kosovo, is the country’s largest higher education institution. This partnership will facilitate educational, cultural, and research collaborations between the two universities, opening doors for student and faculty exchanges, as well as opportunities for scholars and staff to engage in cross-border learning experiences.
Drake University, as a globally engaged institution, actively seeks sustainable cooperative opportunities with higher education institutions, government entities, and non-governmental organizations worldwide. This marks Drake’s 20th global partnership across 14 countries, underscoring its commitment to international collaboration and cultural exchange.
The University’s enduring engagement with Kosovo is part of a broader Iowa-Kosovo relationship. Kosovo established a consulate in Des Moines in 2016, marking an important milestone. This consulate, located on Court Avenue in Des Moines, remains Iowa’s only foreign diplomatic office, reinforcing the special and lasting connection between the two regions.
The new academic cooperation agreement between Drake University and the University of Prishtina will offer a multitude of benefits to students, faculty, staff, and scholars at both institutions. Students will have the opportunity to participate in exchange programs, immersing themselves in a new culture and learning from world-class faculty. Faculty will be able to collaborate on research projects, share best practices, and co-teach courses. Staff will have the opportunity to learn about different institutional cultures and exchange ideas for improving operations. And scholars will be able to access new resources and networks, furthering their research and teaching.
