The president of Egypt, Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, has announced the appointment of Amr El-Hamami as the new ambassador of Egypt to Ankara, Turkey.
His appointment was announced following the successful discussion between Cairo and Ankara, with each agreeing to resume diplomatic relations starting with the opening of their respective embassies.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s re-election in May this year reopened a new chapter in Egypt-Turkey relations. And discussions between the two leaders have seemingly put an end to the nearly decade-long diplomatic feud.
By this appointment, Ambassador El-Hamami, who before the announcement was Egypt’s charge d’affaires in Turkey, will lead the delegation as the country’s ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to Ankara. This is in line with Egypt’s presidential decree 266/2023.
In a related development, Turkey announced the appointment of Salih Mutlu En as the leader of its mission to Cairo, Egypt.
The re-establishment of relations and appointment of designated ambassadors between the two countries rekindles hope for future engagements and bilateral relations that can foster stronger economic and infrastructural development.
Before his appointment, Amb. El-Hamami was a renowned and veteran diplomat who served as the head of legal and consular affairs at the foreign ministry’s office from 2009 to 2011.
From 2011 to 2015, El-Hamami served as legal counselor for the Egyptian Mission to the United Nations in New York, U.S.
He held the position of deputy director at the Foreign Ministry office in Cairo until 2018.
Between 2018 and 2019, he was in charge of legal affairs at the UN.
Since his posting to Ankara in 2019, Amb. El-Hamami has been a serving chargé d’affaires at the Egyptian embassy in Turkey.
Through his years in the diplomatic circle, Amb. El-Hamami has held the position of consul at Egypt’s embassies in Africa and Europe, including Niger and Bulgaria.
