Estonia and Ukraine took a major step forward in strengthening their relationship with the opening of an honorary consulate in Zhytomyr Oblast, located in northern Ukraine on Wednesday, March 27, 2024 according to a statement from the official website of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This is the first Estonian honorary consulate to open in Ukraine since Crimea’s annexation by Russia.
Mykola Sichenko takes on the important role of Estonian honorary consul in Zhytomyr. He is responsible for providing consular services to Estonian citizens in the region.
Lauri Hussar, President of the Estonian Parliament; Annely Kolk, Estonian Ambassador to Ukraine; and Vitaliy Bunechko, Governor of Zhytomyr Oblast, jointly opened the honorary consulate.
During the opening, Ambassador Annely Kolk pointed out the consulate’s function in boosting aid and economic ties between the two countries. “In cooperation with the honorary consul, the premises of the consulate can be used as an Estonian centre for presenting various business projects, cultural exchange, and other activities in developing relations between our states,” Kolk stated.
The consulate’s location is strategically chosen, in a key area for Estonia’s future development and reconstruction efforts in Ukraine.
