On December 7, 2023, Ethiopia and the European Union (EU) held a full-day Structured Dialogue, marking a significant step towards strengthening their relationship. Led by Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonnen and EU Delegation Head Ambassador Roland Kobia, the dialogue brought together representatives from both entities to discuss critical issues and pave the way for a more robust partnership.
The dialogue focused on several key areas, including trade, peace, and economic development. Both parties recognized the importance of enhancing Ethiopia’s utilization of the Everything But Arms trade regime, recognizing the potential to boost exports and stimulate economic growth. Additionally, the need for continued efforts towards consolidating peace and stability in Ethiopia was highlighted, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to supporting ongoing peace processes and promoting lasting reconciliation.
Accelerating economic reforms was also identified as a crucial area for collaboration. The dialogue acknowledged the importance of good governance, a more enabling business environment, and attracting foreign investment for Ethiopia’s long-term development. Furthermore, both parties emphasized the value of open and honest communication. The Structured Dialogue provided a platform for frank and constructive discussions on domestic, regional, and international issues, building trust and understanding for future collaborations.
The dialogue concluded with a commitment from both Ethiopia and the EU to continue addressing all issues of mutual interest through future dialogues.
