The summit of the European Political Community taking place in Moldova, a border country with Ukraine, is expected to rattle Russia and send a clear message of solidarity, unity, and unwavering support to Ukraine, says Josep Borrell, the Chief of EU Diplomacy.
In a statement, Borrell said, “I hope that the presence of so many leaders here, not far from Ukraine, a few kilometres from the border, will send a strong message about the unity of many, many states, not only in the EU but also other [countries], about the defence of international order, about the defence of people’s right to defend their sovereignty. It is important that this message reaches Russia.”
Borrel expressed concern over what he called Russia’s continued attack on Ukrainian civilians. He referred to Russia’s nighttime missile offensives on the Ukrainian city of Kiev as evidence.
The European Political Community holding for a second time will focus on cooperation in the attempt to bring about peace in the light of the conflict in Ukraine and comparable crises, the protection of democracy, enhancing energy security, and the resilience of European states.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who was present at the summit, expressed the wish of the people of Ukraine, and more specifically, Moldova, when he said that Moldova and Ukraine inclusion in mainstream European discussions will result in both nations joining the EU.
Ukraine is presently at war with Russia over its resolve to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. The war began on February 24, 2022.
