Can you share your journey into becoming an Image Consultant and what inspired your transition from a Fortune 500 company to focusing on personal image and fashion consulting?
I worked for General Electric for many years at its headquarters in Washington D.C. However, during vacations, I’d find myself drawn to the fashion scene in Paris and Italy. It was a passion that simmered for years. Then, a personal tragedy struck. Losing my son was devastating, and it took a toll on my health. But during that difficult time, I rediscovered the power of color and image. It sounds strange maybe, but getting dressed each day, choosing colors that made me feel good, it became a small act of self-care, a way to take back control. A dear friend, Cindy Eichberg, and a wonderful doctor, Suzanne Schmidt Davis were by my side too, helping me heal in every way.
I remember attending an event early on. A woman approached me, her curiosity piqued. “What season are you?” she inquired. I smiled and explained my philosophy of moving beyond seasonal limitations. Intrigued, she requested my card and followed up with a lunch invitation. It was during that conversation that she became my first client. We transformed her wardrobe, and the results were immediate. At a convention in Colorado, a presenter pointed to her in the audience, exclaiming, “If everyone here dressed like Liz, you’d all be making over $1,000 a day!” Luckily, many attendees were from the D.C. area, and word of mouth ignited my business. Seeing the positive impact on my clients’ lives fueled my passion. Referrals became my engine, propelling my success. That’s when it hit me: if this could help me, it could help others. And that’s how JP Image Consulting was born – a mission to empower people to feel confident and successful through image.
How do you approach customizing a polished and sophisticated image tailored to professional and personal contexts for your clients?
Every client is unique, that’s what makes this work so interesting. I take the time to understand their lifestyle, their goals, whether it’s climbing the corporate ladder or projecting a polished personal brand. We create wardrobe solutions that are about more than just trends – it’s about color, style, and finding that perfect fit. You should see the look on someone’s face after a before-and-after photo session! It’s a reminder of how powerful this transformation can be.
Can you share success stories from your career and how these stories have impacted your clients’ professional lives?
Honestly, the most rewarding part is seeing the positive impact on my clients’ lives. I have had tremendous results with people who have had great success. Everyone I have worked with has had great success. Not only success but, I have made some wonderful friends and have kept wonderful friends. Like the time I helped Nancy with her colors for a Kaiser Permanente interview. She landed the top sales position, and guess what? She became their top salesperson! Or Susan, a minister who found the confidence to dress for her calling. We’re still in touch, many of my clients become friends. There was even this client who flew in on a private plane, nervous for an important meeting. We worked on her wardrobe, and that night at a meeting, no one recognized her – they just saw this incredibly poised, confident woman. It’s moments like those that make it all worthwhile.
How does color psychology influence personal image consulting, and how do you help clients leverage this knowledge?
Fashion trends are fun, but there’s a deeper science at play here – color psychology. Everyone should know about the shades of color and their patterns that make a great difference in their lives. Understanding how colors affect perception is a cornerstone of what I do. It’s amazing to see my clients embrace their “colors” and exude confidence online, whether it’s on LinkedIn or Facebook. They light up! Just the other day, I saw Myra Galbreath Smith looking radiant in her signature colors while celebrating her father’s birthday. It’s truly rewarding to see my clients embrace their colors and experience the positive impact it has on their lives.
What are common challenges your clients face with their personal image, and how do you help them overcome these challenges?
Working with clients is incredibly rewarding. They learn so much during the wardrobe consultations, but the real eye-opener is often the “before and after” photos. People simply don’t see themselves the way others do! Their reactions are priceless – they’re truly astounded by the difference. The wardrobe transformation itself is powerful, but witnessing the confidence boost when they inevitably receive compliments is another level of satisfaction. Let me tell you about one client I worked with years ago. We recently reconnected, and she shared a heartwarming story. She got out of her car in a parking lot, and a stranger stopped her to say how stunning she looked! These moments truly touch my heart. It’s amazing to see how my clients embrace their transformations and continue to experience the positive impact for years to come.
How do you advise clients in building high-quality, versatile wardrobes that align with their personal style and professional goals?
When I meet with clients, I explore several key areas to understand their needs. First, I consider their heritage and skin tone to determine the most flattering colors. Their lifestyle is also crucial – working from home is a growing trend, but I always encourage clients to get dressed in their colors, even if they’re not going into an office. Feeling confident in what you wear can significantly impact your productivity.
Let me share a personal story that exemplifies the power of color. Many years ago, I underwent thyroid surgery. Thankfully, the results were benign. However, upon entering my assigned hospital room, I was immediately struck by the overwhelming olive green walls and patterned drapes. I knew I wouldn’t recover well in such a draining environment. The kind nurse offered to show me other rooms, and I chose a calming blue one. I even brought in my own sheets and wore my own clothes instead of the hospital gown. The staff was astonished at my speedy recovery – they’d never had a patient leave so soon after such surgery. I firmly believe my positive attitude and the uplifting environment I created, thanks to the calming blue tones, played an important role in my quick recovery.
How do cultural differences influence personal style in your international experience, and how do you adapt your approach accordingly?
Well, I have worked with a lot of people from all over the world. From China to the Middle East. My work has taken me to several countries and it’s been fascinating to see how cultural influences shape personal style. For example, I once helped a friend from Bahrain navigate the intricacies of Middle Eastern fashion while shopping in Paris – a truly unique experience!
What strategies do you recommend for making smart and stylish wardrobe choices, or “shopping like an expert”?
Armed with a personalized shopping list, we hit the stores together. Budget is always a concern, and I have a keen eye for spotting hidden gems that might become future favorites. But remember, alterations are key. Clothes should fit beautifully, and I have a network of amazing tailors who ensure a flawless look.
There’s an undeniable link between personal image and personal branding. Crafting a strong visual presence, whether it’s through professional attire or a carefully curated strong visual presence, can leave a lasting impression. It’s about projecting confidence and authenticity, letting your unique style shine through in a way that resonates with your target audience.
