Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs bestowed the prestigious title of “Ambassador of Italian Sport in the World” upon the Giro d’Italia, marking the renowned cycling event as a catalyst for promoting the “Made in Italy” brand and fostering peace amidst global tensions in a ceremony held at the Farnesina on Tuesday.
The event, themed “Italy in Motion,” was graced by key figures such as Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani and President of RCS Urbano Cairo, who emphasised the race’s significance as a symbol of national pride and international representation.
During the presentation, RCS President Urbano Cairo presented Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani with a personalised pink jersey, which represents the Giro d’Italia’s iconic leader’s jersey. In exchange, the Minister of Foreign Affairs gave Cairo a commemorative scroll, recognising the event’s significance in promoting Italian excellence and unity on a global scale.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Tajani emphasised the Giro d’Italia’s role as a catalyst for promoting the “Made in Italy” brand and fostering peace in the midst of global tensions. In his address, he said, “Sport is a tool for peace, especially in times of international turmoil. Through sport, we must convey messages of peace, and Italy aims to promote sports as a vehicle for peace.” Tajani also highlighted the promotional aspect of the event, stating, “Promoting the Giro also serves to boost the ‘Made in Italy’ brand, showcasing not just sport but also exemplary industrial and entrepreneurial activities.”
Urbano Cairo expressed his delight with the Giro d’Italia being named as an ambassador for Italian sport, thanking the Minister of Foreign Affairs for the honour. He emphasised the event’s potential to promote Italy’s values and beauty worldwide, he said, “The Giro has tremendous potential to further support our country. Promoting Italy’s beauty can attract more tourists, not only to witness the race but also to explore our cities and villages.”
Meanwhile, the Giro d’Italia will begin on May 4th in Turin and end in Rome on May 26th. With 21 stages spanning 3,386 kilometres through Italy’s breathtaking landscapes, the event promises to showcase top-tier cycling talent. Among the contenders is Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogacar, who is widely regarded as one of the world’s best cyclists. Urbano Cairo frequently touts the Giro as the world’s toughest race, set in the most beautiful country. RTL 102.5, the Giro d’Italia’s entertainment partner, will be on hand to cover the race while also highlighting Italy’s many attractions and cultural treasures.
