China is ready to negotiate with the United States at all levels, Chinese Vice President Chan Cheng stated this Wednesday at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in Singapore. “We stand committed to fostering open communication and dialogue with the United States at all levels, as well as to develop mutually beneficial cooperation, and collaborate in addressing global challenges while acknowledging and navigating our differences,” noted the Chinese Vice President. According to him, the recent meetings of high-ranking representatives of the US and China point to the improvement of mutual relations.

The proof of this development should be expected in the meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden during next week’s APEC summit in San Francisco. The American side has confirmed the possibility of such a meeting, the Chinese side has not yet.

The United States and China have one of the world’s most important and complex relationships. Next year they will commemorate the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties. During their existence, both countries experienced periods of cooperation and tensions, especially in trade, climate change, human rights, and security issues on Taiwan. Recently, the relationship has experienced significant strains. However, communication between Beijing and Washington intensified this year, thanks to a series of visits by high-ranking American officials to China.

The Chinese Ambassador to the US Xie Feng aptly stated in October that both countries should prioritize cooperation over rivalry, pursue win-win outcomes, not zero-sum games, and together stabilize and improve this relationship, not allow it to slide into conflict or confrontation. According to him “going forward, we need to find a constructive path for coexistence in the evolving global landscape.” We can only add that this is also our wish, especially in this globalized and troubled world.
