The Indian Embassy in Seoul, in collaboration with the Korea Yoga Association, recently held a press conference to announce the upcoming 9th International Day of Yoga (IDY) events planned across South Korea. This celebration aims to promote the holistic benefits of yoga and strengthen diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Yoga, an ancient practice originating from India, has gained global recognition for its ability to enhance physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Recognizing its significance, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in 2014, following the initiative of India’s Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi.
His Excellency, Amit Kumar, Ambassador of India to the Republic of Korea (ROK), emphasized that yoga embodies the unity of mind, body, and action. It offers a holistic approach to health and well-being, addressing the rise of lifestyle diseases and combating stress. Especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, the practice of yoga has proven beneficial in managing mental health issues and promoting overall wellness, he stated.
The upcoming IDY events in South Korea will be held at iconic locations, including Seoul’s Olympic Park on June 17, Gurye on June 10, Jeju on June 21, Busan on June 23, and Gwangju on June 24. These events will bring together yoga enthusiasts and create awareness about the transformative power of yoga.
Furthermore, the 9th International Day of Yoga coincides with the 50th anniversary of India-ROK diplomatic ties. To promote this special occasion, renowned Korean actress Ms. Chung Ae-rie and columnist Mr. Kim Tae-hoon have been appointed as Brand Ambassadors, showcasing their commitment to advocating for yoga and its benefits.
In addition to highlighting the importance of yoga, Ambassador Kumar underscored two global initiatives, namely Mission Life or Lifestyle for Environment and the Year of the Millets. Mission LiFE inspires individuals and communities to adopt eco-friendly habits, contributing to a sustainable future, while the International Year of the Millets focuses on promoting healthy and sustainable living practices.
Yoga’s journey from India to the world represents a powerful cultural exchange. It has become a symbol of unity and harmony, transcending borders and connecting people from various backgrounds. The popularity of yoga continues to grow, with millions of practitioners worldwide recognizing its transformative impact on physical fitness, mental well-being, and spiritual growth.
As India and Korea come together to celebrate the 9th International Day of Yoga, they not only promote health and wellness but also strengthen their diplomatic relations. This collaborative effort underscores the universal appeal of yoga and its ability to foster a sense of unity and cultural understanding.
