This International Human Rights Day, the Jacobs-Abbey Institute affirms the United Nations’ 2023 theme, “Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All,” while numerous conflicts undermine these noble principles. We call upon leaders and citizens to courageously defend human rights where they are most imperiled.
In Israel and Palestine, the latest flare-up of violence between Israeli forces and Hamas endangers thousands of innocent Palestinian and Israeli lives. The destruction of homes, hospitals, and infrastructure in Gaza has left civilians without necessities, in violation of their fundamental dignity.
In Ukraine, Russia’s full-scale invasion has created a humanitarian catastrophe, displacing millions internally and as refugees. Deliberate attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure demonstrate blatant disregard for human life and international law.
On this 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Jacobs-Abbey Institute stands with all victims of aggression. We call for immediate ceasefires, withdrawal of forces violating sovereignty, access to humanitarian aid, and political solutions that restore peace and justice.
Additionally, the Institute remains deeply concerned by threats from Iran, North Korea, and other regimes developing nuclear weapons technology while oppressing their own citizens and destabilizing regions. Their proliferation of arms contradicts essential human rights priorities.
Leaders who deny freedom and security from within their borders can scarcely be expected to uphold liberty abroad. Therefore, we call on the international community to link diplomacy on nuclear non-proliferation to concrete improvements in human rights where they need to catch up.
On this International Human Rights Day, words without action from the global community ring hollow. The Jacobs-Abbey Institute for Leadership Studies calls on all nations to transcend politics, borders, and differences to defend the universal human rights to safety, freedom, and justice where they face worldwide jeopardy. The dignity of our shared humanity depends on action today.
