John Dramani Mahama, former president and leader of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been declared the winner of Ghana’s 2024 presidential election. Securing 56.55% of the vote, Mahama defeated his closest rival, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 41.15%

The election, held on December 7, 2024, marked a political comeback for Mahama, who previously served as president from 2012 to 2017. His victory signals a shift in Ghana’s political landscape, driven by voter concerns over economic challenges, including inflation and unemployment, which were key themes during the campaign

Electoral Highlights

  • Voter Turnout: Approximately 60.9% of registered voters participated, reflecting steady engagement in Ghana’s democratic process.
  • Parliamentary Results: The NDC also secured a parliamentary majority, enhancing their ability to implement their agenda MyJoyOnline.

Post-Election Reactions

The election results were announced amidst a peaceful yet tense environment. While isolated incidents of violence and irregularities were reported, international observers commended the overall transparency of the process. Dr. Bawumia conceded defeat and urged unity among Ghanaians.
