Today marks the International Day for Women in Diplomacy (IDWID), a significant event that celebrates the vital role women play in global governance. This year’s IDWID Forum, organized by RASIT’s programs, the World Youth League, and Women in Science International League, brings together women in diplomacy, youth, and women in science experts from around the world. The forum aims to discuss the role of women diplomats in breaking barriers and shaping the future to achieve sustainable development goals.

The theme for this year’s forum is “Breaking Barriers, Shaping the Future: Women in Diplomacy for Sustainable Development,” aligning with the UN’s recognition of women in diplomacy as agents for socio-economic equity and inclusive sustainable development. The IDWID Forum provides an opportunity for youth to engage with women diplomats as role models, fostering their aspirations in diplomatic endeavors.

Women’s involvement in diplomacy is crucial. They represent half of the world’s population and bring immense potential. Their presence expands the range of issues considered and improves outcomes. Research shows that when women hold leadership positions, they pass laws and policies that benefit people, the environment and social cohesion.

Despite progress, global representation of women in political office remains insufficient. Achieving equal representation requires dismantling barriers and implementing policies that promote gender equality. Inclusive governance, with women at the table, leads to comprehensive decision-making and positive long-term change.

The IDWID Forum features high-level conversations with distinguished women ambassadors. Success stories inspire participants and shed light on the challenges these experts face. Discussions focus on women in diplomacy for sustainable development, the inclusion of disabled diplomats, and the intersection of science and diplomacy for peace and sustainable development.

Events like the IDWID Forum play a crucial role in inspiring women to pursue careers in diplomacy. By celebrating accomplishments, addressing barriers, and sharing experiences, women ambassadors become role models and mentors for aspiring diplomats. The involvement of women in science in supporting their peers in diplomacy is also commendable, as it enhances diplomatic efforts for peace and sustainable development.

On the International Day for Women in Diplomacy, it is expected that the achievements of women diplomats will be celebrated, and there will be a firm commitment to fostering a more inclusive and equitable world. By breaking barriers and shaping the future, women in diplomacy will continue to drive positive change, leaving a lasting impact on societies and paving the way for a better and more sustainable world for all.
