The International Human Rights Summit held at the United Nations from July 18-20, 2024 welcomed Alejandra Geithner, who heads the Minority Arts and Media Foundation. Geithner participated in a discussion on “Upholding Human Rights Through Arts and Media,” exploring creative approaches to human rights advocacy.
Hosted annually with support from Timor-Leste’s UN Mission, the summit has drawn global participants since 2004. It seeks to spread awareness of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and tackle ongoing abuses.
Geithner reflected on her experience: “Taking part in this summit was eye-opening. It allowed me to speak up for Latino communities and people with disabilities, showing how our foundation uses art to educate and empower.”
She pushed for broader inclusion of marginalized groups in global talks. Her foundation runs programs like “ExpresArte” and “Theater for Human Rights,” which use drama to spark social change, boost personal growth, and showcase cultural variety.
Geithner’s involvement sheds light on how the arts and media can bolster human rights globally while lifting up voices that often go unheard.
The Minority Arts and Media Foundation keeps working to strengthen underrepresented communities through creative outlets.
