In a momentous development, King Mohammed VI of Morocco has conveyed his gratitude to Israel’s Prime Minister, Mr. Benjamin Netanyahu, for Israel’s decision to acknowledge Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara region. The Moroccan King praised this decision as fair and forward-thinking, highlighting its warm reception among the Moroccan people and the nation’s driving forces.

The issue of the Moroccan Sahara holds significant importance as a national cause and remains a top priority in Morocco’s foreign policy. King Mohammed VI emphasized that Israel’s recognition reaffirms Morocco’s legal entitlement and irrefutable historical rights over its Saharan Provinces. The King stressed the firmly established and undeniable legal ties between the Moroccan State and the populations inhabiting these territories, which have always been treasured by Morocco’s Monarchs.

Furthermore, the King commended Israel’s decision for its foresight, aligning with the international dynamic supporting a final resolution to the regional dispute over the Sahara. This resolution is based on the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative, aiming to grant the Sahara region autonomy while maintaining Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The King highlighted that numerous countries worldwide have supported this approach, making Israel’s recognition a significant step forward.

Bilateral relations between Morocco and Israel have been flourishing since December 2020, with notable progress in various sectors. The exchange of visits by officials and the business community, the development of the bilateral framework, the diversification of cooperation, and the consolidation of trade relations have all contributed to the unprecedented momentum in their ties. The strong human bonds, particularly through the Jewish community of Moroccan origin, have acted as a catalyst in strengthening the relationship between the two countries.

King Mohammed VI expressed confidence that Mr. Netanyahu’s clear position on the Moroccan identity of the Sahara will further enhance the ties between Morocco and Israel. The King extended an invitation to Mr. Netanyahu to visit Morocco on a mutually agreed date, emphasizing that this meeting will create new possibilities for bilateral relations. Additionally, the King highlighted the importance of promoting peace in the region, considering the principles outlined in the Tripartite Declaration signed by Morocco, the United States, and Israel in December 2020.

The recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Western Sahara by Israel marks a significant diplomatic boost for Morocco. This recognition, along with Israel’s positive consideration of establishing a consulate in the city of Dakhla, further solidifies the growing ties between the two nations. It also reflects the evolving international support for resolving the long-standing regional dispute.

As Morocco and Israel continue to strengthen their relations, this development holds the potential for increased cooperation and mutual benefits in various fields. The recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara by Israel sets the stage for further diplomatic engagements and paves the way for a more peaceful and prosperous future in the region.
