On April 5, 2023, the outgoing British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing, paid her farewell visit to His Excellency President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House in Abuja. The meeting provided an opportunity to reflect on the strong partnership between the UK and Nigeria and discuss ways to further strengthen the relationship in key areas such as economic development, security, culture, and education.

The UK-Nigeria partnership is built on a solid foundation of historical, cultural, and economic ties. Nigeria is the UK’s second-largest trading partner in Africa, and both countries have a long history of collaboration in critical areas such as education, healthcare, and security. Over the years, the UK has played a pivotal role in supporting Nigeria’s economic growth, providing development assistance and trade support, and promoting investment and trade links.

During her meeting with President Buhari, High Commissioner Laing expressed her gratitude for the support and cooperation she received during her tenure in Nigeria. She commended Nigeria’s progress in critical areas such as anti-corruption, economic diversification, and education and highlighted the need to continue working together to address the remaining challenges.

As both countries continue to navigate a rapidly changing global landscape, the bonds between them will only grow stronger, and the opportunities for collaboration and cooperation will only increase. The farewell call between President Buhari and High Commissioner Laing highlighted the importance of the UK-Nigeria partnership and the potential for continued progress in critical areas of mutual interest.
