On February 12th, 2024, the Pacific set sail on a transformative journey with a brand new maritime framework! Spearheaded by the Pacific Community and fueled by European Union support, this initiative aims to make the Pacific’s maritime sector safer, cleaner, and fairer for everyone.

“This framework guides us towards safe, accessible, and green seas for future generations,” says Dr. Stuart Minchin, Director-General of the SPC. It focuses on four key areas: boosting safety and security, fighting climate change with sustainable practices, connecting remote communities through affordable transport, and lowering high transportation costs.

The EU’s €140,000 funding shows their commitment to shared goals like a “safe, resilient, green, clean, digital, and gender-just maritime sector,” as stated by H.E. Barbara Plinkert, EU Ambassador to the Pacific.

With extensive consultations planned and key partners like the IMO on board, inclusivity, and collaboration are at the heart of this initiative. Mr. George Tavo, Acting Permanent Secretary of Fiji’s Ministry of Public Works & Meteorological Services, acknowledges its importance: “Sea transport is our lifeline,” he emphasizes.

The Pacific Regional One Maritime Framework promises a brighter future for the region’s maritime sector, paving the way for a more secure, sustainable, and equitable journey for all.

On 12 February, the European Union and the @spc_cps
signed a funding agreement to foster a safe, resilient, green, clean, digital, and gender-just maritime transport sector for the #BluePacific
