The Black Professionals in International Affairs (BPIA) on June 7 celebrated a milestone – their 35th anniversary held at the residence of Swiss Ambassador to the United States, Ambassador Pitteloud. The gathering featured another inspiring address by Dr. Stacey A. Dixon, the Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence (PDDNI).
Dr. Dixon, a leader with over 20 years of intelligence experience, expressed her delight at being part of the event, “It’s such a pleasure to be here Ambassador Pitteloud. Thank you for hosting in this beautiful home of yours.”
She spoke about the mission of BPIA, which was created 35 years ago to increase the engagement of African Americans and Americans of African Heritage in International affairs. She stated, “This work is more vital to our world and to our work than at any time in recent history.”
Furthermore, Dr. Dixon drew parallels between the traits of great diplomats and intelligence officers, noting that they are articulate, creative, driven, and persevere even under pressure. She also stressed the value of diversity, stating, “Diversity takes and maximizes the advantages of the abilities of our nation and our communities and groups in which we are a part of. And when we embrace it, it reflects the strength and values that we cherish. It also helps us better understand the countries, cultures, customs and trends all over the world. Or, the intelligence community. Diversity is a mission.”
She made a strong case for the need for individuals with a passion for International Affairs in the Intelligence community, and even made a recruiting pitch, “There is a need and a place for people like you in my community. In the Intelligence community there are many who share your passion for International Affairs. We need you and the skills that you bring to help carry out our mission to counter adversaries, to address transnational issues like climate change and its National Security Implications.”
The PDDNI also praised the partnership between the United States and Switzerland, noting shared values of freedom and opportunity. She commended Switzerland’s leadership in diplomacy and advocacy for global peace and prosperity.
