Namibia’s second-elected president, Hage Geingob, has died while receiving medical treatment at a hospital in the country’s capital, Windhoek.
A statement by Vice President Nangolo Mbumba, who is the acting president, said President Geingob died in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The statement said he died with his wife, Madame Monica, and his children at his side.
Geingob, who was serving his second term as president, revealed last month that he was receiving treatment for cancer.
He was first elected president in 2014 and was the country’s longest-serving prime minister.
He underwent brain surgery in 2013, and in 2023, he also underwent an aortic operation in South Africa.
In January, former President Geingob informed Namibians of his medical conditions and his decision to commence medical treatment following advice from his medical team.
