Saudi Arabia’s new Ambassador to Iran, Abdullah bin Saud Al-Enezi, is set to resume duties after he arrived in Tehran, the Iranian capital, on Tuesday. Amb. Al-Enezi was welcomed at the airport by some senior Iranian officials.
While speaking to the media moments after his arrival, Amb. Al-Enezi said that he was in Iran to strengthen relations between the two countries.
He further stated that “the directives of the wise leadership confirm the importance of strengthening relations, intensifying communication and meetings between the Kingdom and Iran, and moving them towards broader horizons.” According to Amb. Al-Enezi, the two countries have common borders and have what it takes to drive mutual prosperity in diverse areas such as economy, development, security, and prosperity.
He highlighted Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince’s “Vision 2030”, saying that the idea as launched by two important figures, Saudi Arabia’s crown prince and Prime Minister Bin Salman, is what is required by the two countries to advance the course of their development and growth.
“This is in accordance with a strategic perspective that establishes the principles of good neighborliness, understanding, constructive and purposeful dialogue, and respect and enhances mutual trust between the two countries,” he said.
However, the newly appointed Iranian envoy to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Alireza Enayati, was in audience with Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi before departing for Riyadh. During the meeting, President Raisi said that strong bilateral relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia would help reduce foreign interest and interference in the region. He went on to state that both countries possess enormous influence within the region and in the Islamic world.
Earlier in the year, Saudi Arabia and Iran reached an agreement to re-establish bilateral relations after seven years and resume the exchange of ambassadors between them.
There was a breakdown in diplomatic relations between the two countries following the 2016 attack by supporters of the government of Iran on the Saudi Arabia Consulate in Mashad and the embassy in Iran’s capital city of Tehran.
China intervened earlier in March with a peace accord to thaw the smoldering diplomatic ties between Saudi Arabia and Iran.
