The BRICS group, comprised of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, extended a surprising invitation to several new members last August. Among them was Saudi Arabia, a move that has sparked speculation about the kingdom’s strategic intentions and the future of BRICS itself.

While fellow Gulf Cooperation Council member the United Arab Emirates readily jumped at the opportunity, Saudi Arabia remains in thoughtful evaluation.

Sources close to the matter indicate a thorough assessment of potential benefits, with no immediate deadline for a decision. China and India, fellow BRICS members, are already Saudi Arabia’s top trading partners.

And as expected, deeper economic integration holds substantial promise for the parties, especially Saudi Arabia.

Therefore, beyond economics, joining BRICS aligns with the group’s declared ambition to champion the developing world.

For Saudi Arabia, this resonates with its own aspirations to play a leading role in the Global South. However, the geopolitical implications are complex.

The ongoing Saudi-BRICS flirtation comes at a time of escalating tensions between the US and China/Russia.

Saudi Arabia’s unfolding ties with Beijing have already raised eyebrows in Washington.

A formal BRICS membership for Saudi Arabia would further solidify a shift in the kingdom’s geopolitical outlook, potentially marking a significant departure, if not a clear turn away from its long-standing alignment with the West.

Despite maintaining strong relations with the US, Saudi Arabia has grown increasingly concerned about perceived waning American commitments to Gulf security. Joining BRICS could be seen as a strategic hedge, diversifying its international partnerships and seeking alternative avenues for economic and political influence.

Saudi Arabia initially made headlines with a premature state TV announcement of its BRICS entry, only to swiftly retract it. This official back-and-forth underscore the delicate balancing acts the kingdom faces.

While the decision remains shrouded in uncertainty, it’s clear that Saudi Arabia’s potential BRICS membership holds significant implications.

Should the kingdom choose to embrace BRICS, the global chessboard would undoubtedly be reshaped, with economic alliances and geopolitical power dynamics undergoing a potentially seismic shift.

The coming months will determine the cause of events that are expected to redefine Saudi-US relations and confirm Saudi Arabia’s ability to chart a new course for itself.
