The Embassy of Türkiye opened its doors on Saturday, April 5, 2025, for a scintillating Nowruz gathering co-hosted with the Embassies of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The event drew a remarkable cross-section of Washington’s professional landscape—diplomats, business leaders, media representatives, community organizers, students, and families—each eager to share in this ancient tradition that offered a window into the rich cultural legacies of the Turkic world through music, dance, cuisine, and conversation.

Nowruz, meaning “new day,” signals the arrival of spring and the renewal of life across many countries in Central Asia and the Middle East. Rooted in ancient traditions and observed for over 3,000 years, the celebration brings families and communities together to share in joy, food, and reflection. In Washington, the atmosphere echoed the same spirit, bringing together professionals from across industries, media executives, students, nonprofit leaders, and diplomats in a show of unity and cultural appreciation.

Ambassador Sedat Önal of Türkiye welcomed guests with a sense of warmth and gratitude, noting the depth of shared history and friendship among the participating countries. He expressed appreciation for the diverse audience who gathered not only to experience the vibrant traditions of Nowruz but to forge deeper relationships across cultures.

Ambassadors Khazar Ibrahim (Azerbaijan), Yerzan Ashikbayev (Kazakhstan), Aibek Moldogaziev (Kyrgyz Republic), Meret Orazov (Turkmenistan), and Furqat Sidikov (Uzbekistan) also gave brief remarks, each offering personal reflections on the meaning of Nowruz in their respective countries and its ability to bring people together.

The event opened with a dazzling cultural showcase that left guests visibly moved. Kazakhstan’s Gulder Dance Group set the tone with a series of elegant performances, including the “Meyram” dance which ended with the joyful “Shashu” candy-throwing tradition, bringing laughter to the crowd. Their choreography to “Kyz Zhibek” and the “Akku” white swan dance offered poetic interpretations of beauty, love, and rebirth.

A Kazakh Tusau kesu ceremony—cutting the rope from a child’s legs as they take their first steps—drew applause for its symbolism and charm. The Kazakh Ambassador conducted the brief ceremony. Kyrgyzstan followed with a soulful komuz performance that stirred nostalgia and admiration in equal measure.

Turkmenistan’s vibrant dance by the Silk Road Dance Group brought ancient rhythms and modern grace to life. Uzbekistan’s piano performance by a 12-year-old added a melodic interlude, displaying technical brilliance and emotional depth. Türkiye’s Turkish Folk Music Quartet brought the room to a collective sway with songs like “Erkilet Güzeli” and “Bayram Gelir Elimize,” weaving voices and instruments into one evocative stream.

Azerbaijan closed the program with a colorful ensemble of dance by the Silk Road Dance Group and a children’s choir that lit up the afternoon. After their performance, Ambassador Khazar Ibrahim presented certificates and gifts to the children, drawing smiles and photographs from every corner of the room.

Toward the end, winners of a painting competition received awards in a gesture that honored youth creativity and connection to cultural heritage. Guests mingled over traditional refreshments, exchanging stories and forging new connections.

In a city that thrives on diplomacy, Nowruz at the Turkish Embassy stood out as a moment when culture did the talking—and everyone listened.
