Bratislava, Slovakia – After a decade of being closed to the public, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic is throwing open its doors on Saturday, June 17, 2023, for Open Diplomacy Day. This event offers an opportunity for visitors to delve into the ministry’s agenda, activities, and gain insights into the workings of Slovak diplomacy.
Located in the historic premises of Hlboká Street and the Palugyay Palace, Open Diplomacy Day promises an immersive and interactive experience for attendees. Step inside the open cabinets of political representatives, take a seat in the “hot chair” of the Minister, and strike a pose for a selfie with State Secretaries. Aspiring diplomats can participate in quizzes and explore diverse career opportunities in diplomacy, while also discovering how the Slovak consulate provides assistance to citizens abroad.
Open Diplomacy Day isn’t just for adults; it’s a treat for the whole family. Children can collect stamps in their own diplomatic passports, solve puzzles, test their flag recognition skills, participate in contests, quizzes and unleash their creativity through painting activities.
Visitors will be able to capture memories by taking photos in specially designed frames, against a backdrop of flag buntings, or in photo corners replicating iconic diplomatic settings. Guests are free to share their experience on social media using the hashtag #DenOtvorenejDiplomacie.
Throughout the day, hosts Veronika Cifrová Ostrihoňová and Matej Sajfa Cifra will guide visitors through a diverse program. Engaging interviews will take place with key figures, ranging from the Minister and Ambassadors to the head chef of the ministry. Cultural performances by talented Slovak musicians will captivate the audience.
Open Diplomacy Day celebrates not only Slovak diplomacy but also international connections. More than 30 foreign embassies will participate, providing visitors with the opportunity to explore diverse cultures and learn about different countries.
The program for Open Diplomacy Day offers a wide range of activities and informative sessions. Starting with the opening ceremony at 10:30 a.m., visitors can look forward to engaging interviews, uplifting musical performances, captivating presentations, and insightful conversations with ambassadors and state secretaries. The day will culminate with an online session with Minister M. Wlachovský at 5:00 p.m., followed by the event’s conclusion at 6:00 p.m.
In addition to the program, Open Diplomacy Day showcases exhibitions that offer glimpses into the history and achievements of Slovak diplomacy. Visitors can explore rare sources and admire the diplomatic skills of past generations. The “Good Idea Slovakia” exhibition highlights the department’s commitment to public diplomacy, fostering communication, and promoting Slovakia’s attractiveness and foreign policy goals. The “Mission Slovakia” exhibition commemorates the 30th anniversary of the Slovak Republic and provides an overview of important diplomatic milestones in the country’s modern history.
The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs has collaborated with the Nedbalka Gallery to present an exhibition of exceptional paintings by renowned Slovak artists at the Palugyay Palace. This artistic endeavor adds an element of cultural appreciation to the event, immersing visitors in the beauty and creativity of Slovak art.
