The U.S. Embassy announced that it has trained over 500 teachers in Nigeria’s coastal city of Lagos. It stated that it was in “readiness for the new school year” that the project was carried out.
The teachers were from different schools and included those without the fundamental modern teaching skills. As part of the training, teachers were taught how to enhance the learning experience and sustain the attention span of students and learners.
They were taught how to use two renowned apps, Canva and Sphero, to “create engaging learning experiences for their students.”
This is aimed at strengthening the teachers’ ability to use modern tools to achieve modern teaching procedures.
The training is one of many development projects undertaken by the U.S. Mission in Nigeria for the year 2023. The U.S. Embassy has been consistent in its support for the growth of education and ensuring that teachers are equipped with modern teaching skills and techniques.
In October 2021, the U.S. Embassy embarked on a two-day teacher training project. The training was themed “Re-Imagining Education X 2021: The Teacher on the Move”, and was targeted at empowering teachers in Nigeria, particularly those in Lagos, with the “street to school initiative”, a U.S. government exchange alumnae-led organization.
In February 2022, the U.S. Consulate General, in collaboration with the Global Air Drone Academy and the Lagos State Ministry of Education, hosted Africa’s first drone soccer competition in Lagos. The event was organized to promote STEM related subjects in schools.
Nigeria-U.S. relations have simmered in recent times and could be said to lack the vigor they were known for in the past. This belief came to the forefront when U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris visited three African countries to foster U.S.-Africa relations, neglecting Nigeria.
