An Introduction to Diplomatic Life in London
Date: Friday 20 October 2017
From: 09:00 – 18:00
Venue: No 11 Cavendish Square, London W1G 0AN
Meet essential contacts for your work
The seminar is ideal for diplomats of all ranks who have been in the capital for less than a year. In the introductory session, diplomats will meet the FCO’s Protocol Directorate, HM Marshal of the Diplomatic Corps and the Dean of Diplomatic Corps. They will also be introduced to specialist diplomatic associations in London.
There will be a series of six workshops for various diplomatic portfolios: political; economic; culture, education and science; press and public diplomacy; consular and home affairs; and admin and finance. Here diplomats will get an overview of how their Whitehall department functions and meet contacts useful to their work.
Embassy Managers, Admin Attachés and Community Liaison Officers are invited to join an Embassy Managers Meeting with FCO Protocol and to meet reputable diplomatic suppliers.
Diplomatic spouse programme
The orientation day will also assist diplomatic families adjusting to life in London. A tailored spouse programme has been introduced, with a series of workshops and networking opportunities for spouses and partners – including male spouses! These will include sessions on professional development, further study, employment and volunteering as well as family-orientated workshops on schooling and childcare. Spouses will also be introduced to the Diplomatic Spouse Club of London and well-established expat spouse networks and will be invited to get to know other diplomatic spouses in their neighbourhood.
Living in London sessions
These workshops will assist both diplomats and spouses and include an essential Personal Safety Seminar hosted by the Diplomatic Protection Group, as well as informative workshops covering health, finance, further study, accommodation and transport. This year there will be a new session on making the most of cultural life and travel during your posting in the UK.
Exhibition, networking and prizes
There is an exhibition area of reputable diplomatic suppliers and there will be plenty of opportunity to network with fellow colleagues and spouses informally over coffee and lunch. A relaxed drinks reception and a superb prize draw will close a busy day.
