The United Kingdom and Ukraine have signed a significant agreement that strengthens their defence partnership and paves the way for closer industrial collaboration. This pact, solidified during the UK’s largest trade mission to Ukraine since the war began, signifies a steadfast commitment by both nations to mutual defence and bolstering their respective defence industries.

The signing ceremony in Kyiv brought together key figures, including Ukraine’s Minister of Strategic Industries Alexander Kamyshin, Defence Minister Rustem Umerov, and UK Minister for Trade Policy Greg Hands. The UK Home Office released a statement highlighting the agreement as a testament to Britain’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s ongoing defence efforts and long-term recovery.

This strategic agreement aims to enhance cooperation on security challenges, fortify both nations’ defence sectors, and launch impactful joint projects. It opens doors for collaborations between major UK defence firms, Ukraine’s armed forces, and local businesses. These initiatives encompass establishing crucial military repair facilities, strengthening civilian infrastructure, and deploying advanced technology to combat cyber threats.

A noteworthy development during the trade mission was the signing of a contract between BAE Systems, a UK defence giant, and the UK Ministry of Defence. This agreement facilitates the maintenance and repair of L119 Light Guns within Ukraine, streamlining servicing and significantly bolstering Ukraine’s defence capabilities.

The UK’s commitment to Ukraine extends beyond defence, encompassing substantial economic and humanitarian aid. Since the conflict’s outset, the UK has provided nearly £12 billion in military, humanitarian, and economic assistance. This includes vital military supplies and extensive sanctions targeting entities linked to Russia’s aggression.

Furthermore, the UK actively supports Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts through non-military means. The UK-Ukraine Infrastructure Taskforce and initiatives like the National Digital Twin Programme exemplify this comprehensive approach, fostering sustainable growth and resilience in Ukraine’s infrastructure.

This new Framework Arrangement builds upon the historic UK-Ukraine Agreement on Security Cooperation, solidifying a profound and enduring partnership between the two nations.
