UN-Habitat’s Acting Executive Director, Ambassador Michal Mlynár urged young people to lead the charge on digital innovation for a sustainable future. Speaking on International Youth Day through a video message, he positioned youth as crucial players in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Mlynár discussed this year’s theme, “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development,” which links digitalization with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He noted, “Digital technologies and data contribute to at least 70% of the 169 SDG targets, profoundly impacting their economic, social, and environmental dimensions.”
The UN-Habitat leader identified youth as key drivers of digital trends and crucial partners in addressing global challenges. He stated, “As the 2030 deadline for the SDGs approaches, youth are essential in leveraging the transformative power of technologies to address global challenges.”
Mlynár mentioned initiatives like the Young Game Changer Initiative and Youth 20-30 cities, which “integrate digital innovation to empower marginalized youth globally.” These programs aim to boost youth participation in governance and decision-making processes.
Addressing challenges faced by African youth, Mlynár noted that while they are more educated than previous generations, they face high unemployment and lack representation in policy arenas. He cited that “only 19% of young Africans believe their governments are performing well on job creation,” showing the need for improved youth engagement in governance.
UN-Habitat’s focus on youth extends beyond International Youth Day. Ambassador Michal Mlynár referred to the organization’s commitment to the Summit of the Future, promoting youth perspectives in urban policies through the Declaration of Future Generations and the Pact for the Future.
In a recent interview with Diplomatic Watch Magazine, Mlynár expanded on his commitment to youth empowerment. He stated, “Empowering young people, particularly in Africa, has been a top personal priority for me.” He regularly engages with UN-Habitat’s Youth Advisory Board and visits youth projects, drawing inspiration from their “energy, activism, and enthusiasm.”
Ambassador Mlynár’s approach to youth engagement is hands-on. He explained, “When we empower young people and include them in discussions and decision-making processes, we’re on the right track. I’ve seen a lot of traction coming from them.” He views young people as “agents and ambassadors of change,” encouraging them to push for faster progress.
The UN-Habitat leader also stressed the inclusion of women and girls in youth initiatives, stating, “Of course, by youth, I very much also mean women and girls. They need to be part of the same conversation.”
As the 2024 International Youth Day ends, Mlynár’s message is clear: harnessing youth potential and digital innovation is key for achieving sustainable and inclusive development. His call to action advocates for practical steps to empower young people and use technology for a better future.
