The United States Embassy and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) have partnered to donate two vans to assist refugees in Costa Rica. The vans, valued at USD $175,000, are equipped with anti-slip flooring, an electrical generator, an access ramp and safety handrails.
The Costa Rican General Migration Directorate will utilize the vans to provide services to individuals who have applied for refugee status but are unable to receive in-person assistance at designated UNHCR centers. The vans will be particularly beneficial in reaching communities that are difficult to access, especially for elderly people and individuals with disabilities.
U.S. Ambassador Cynthia Telles expressed her satisfaction with the donation, stating that it demonstrates the United States’ sustained support for Costa Rica and UNHCR in addressing the needs of refugees and helping them rebuild their lives.
The United States has been a significant contributor to organizations working with migrants in Costa Rica, having provided over USD $55 million between fiscal years 2017 and 2022. This donation further reflects the ongoing commitment of the United States and UNHCR to assisting refugees in need.
