The United States urged transparency from the Democratic Republic of Congo’s electoral authorities in announcing the results of the upcoming presidential vote. This follows concerns over the commission’s delay and allegations of rigging during the 2018 elections.
While commending the commission’s effort for a timely voting process, the State Department emphasized the importance of clear information regarding result timing and procedures. This step, they believe, would strengthen public trust in the electoral process.
The spokesperson stressed the need for peaceful and fair elections, urging all candidates and parties to play their role in achieving this.
Additionally, upholding freedom of expression, including press and assembly, was highlighted as crucial.
In the 2018 elections, runner-up Martin Fayulu accused the commission of manipulating the results in favor of eventual winner Felix Tshisekedi, who is now running for re-election.
Despite the controversy, that election represented the first peaceful transfer of power in the nation’s history.
This year’s campaign has seen less political unrest compared to 2018, although violence from militias continues to plague eastern provinces.
