Renowned opera Singer Carla Canales met 94 years old Chinese conductor Zheng Xiaoying during her recent visit to Xiamen, Fujian province. They discussed cultural exchange programs and the development of nonprofit arts organizations. Canales, a Senior Fellow at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and a Harvard Kennedy School Fellow presented Zheng with a letter of appreciation. In return, Zheng gifted Canales a Chinese version of the opera Carmen and recordings of Chinese operas.
Canales, an Arts Envoy for the US State Department, has extensive experience in cultural diplomacy. She believes that cultural exchange can address global challenges and emphasizes its importance. Through her missions in Mexico, Honduras, and Indonesia, Canales witnessed the power of cultural diplomacy firsthand. She found that true exchange and participation are more effective than traditional tours and performances alone.
One notable mission took place in Campeche, Mexico, where Canales aimed to bridge the cultural gap between the United States and Mexico. She collaborated with local indigenous populations and government officials to organize a soccer match and invite children to perform in her concert. This led to the formation of a children’s chorus and the establishment of a cultural hub in the community.
Canales has also been involved in cultural diplomacy efforts in China, performing in multiple cities. Despite political differences, she believes that cultural bonds between countries are expanding. The growing popularity of American cultural exports in China and the increased awareness of Chinese traditions in the United States exemplify this trend.
In 2020, Canales conducted a virtual program for the US Embassy in Honduras, focusing on values such as integrity and kindness. She highlights the potential of digital cultural diplomacy, which allows for longer and more participatory programs without travel limitations.
Another endeavor was the Triple Threat Academy in Jakarta, Indonesia, supported by the US Embassy. The program mentored and empowered local artists in artistic development, advocacy, and entrepreneurship. It provided free online classes and received positive feedback.
I had such an incredible experience performing and meeting other artists and performers in Zhangzhou China last week. It was truly a deeply moving and inspiring experience. I'm very thankful to all who made this possible! Indeed, let's do more please! #culturaldiplomacy https://t.co/qFwjh23p5v
