On Wednesday, May 11th, 2023, the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) convened the First Regular Session of the 23rd Congress, during which new officials were elected. The most notable development of the day was the election of the 10th President of the FSM, His Excellency Wesley W. Simina. President Simina, who previously served as the Senator At-Large for Chuuk State, succeeded former President David W. Panuelo. He was inaugurated during the ceremony, marking the official start of his presidency.
The Honorable Aren B. Palik, the former Senator At-Large for Kosrae State, was elected as the new Vice President of the FSM. The Congress of the FSM also elected the Speaker, Vice Speaker, and Floor Leader of the Congress, with the Honorable Esmond B. Moses, the Honorable Robson U. Romolow, and the Honorable Quincy Lawrence winning these positions, respectively. Moreover, various Committees of the Congress of the FSM were appointed Chairs.
The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) is an independent, sovereign nation composed of four states, namely Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei, and Yap. Chuuk, previously known as Truk, has a land area of approximately 49.2 square miles and consists of seven major island groups. Pohnpei, on the other hand, has a land area of about 133.4 square miles, mostly occupied by Pohnpei Island, the largest island in the FSM. Yap comprises four relatively large islands, seven small islands, and 134 atolls, with a total land area of approximately 45 square miles. Finally, Kosrae, previously known as Kusaie, is primarily one high island, with a land area of about 42.3 square miles.
Each state has its own constitution and government structure that includes executive, legislative, and judicial branches. Additionally, each constitution contains provisions that recognize and preserve local customs and traditions.
