The DR Congo’s elections have plunged into chaos, marred by widespread delays, allegations of fraud, violence, and logistical nightmares.
Voting, initially scheduled for Wednesday, stretched far beyond sunset due to last-minute scrambling and malfunctioning electronic systems. Despite CENI’s assurances, the opposition roars with accusations of a rigged game.
Martin Fayulu, a familiar face after the disputed 2018 election, declared the situation “total chaos.” He threatened to challenge the entire vote if all eligible citizens couldn’t cast their ballots.
Echoing his anxieties, Nobel laureate and presidential hopeful Denis Mukwege condemned the “serious dysfunction and irregularities,” fearing they’re paving the way for electoral fraud.
Moise Katumbi, another contender, urged his supporters to stay vigilant and monitor the results posted at each polling station. His words resonated with the general anxiety surrounding the election’s credibility.
The delays extend far beyond just the opening ceremonies; there are problems with staffing, supplies, and transportation as well.
Millions displaced by eastern DRC’s conflict couldn’t register, while others in Goma found their names inexplicably missing from voting lists.
Voters’ concerns about disenfranchisement are heightened by reports of ink smudging on ballots and unverified names on registration lists.
“The organization of the elections raises serious doubts about the credibility, transparency, and reliability of the results,” said Bienvenu Matumo, a local rights activist.
With a fractured opposition and Tshisekedi seeking a second term, the political landscape appears tilted.
However, whispers of discontent simmer even in Tshisekedi’s stronghold, Kinshasa. Joseph Tshibadi, a business owner, acknowledges Tshisekedi’s efforts towards democracy but laments the persistent violence in the east. “The beginning is always hard,” he concedes, casting his hopeful vote for a 90% landslide victory for his candidate.
As night falls and voting continues, the DRC’s future hangs in the balance. The specter of fraud looms large, threatening to further fracture a nation already grappling with conflict and disillusionment.
Only time will tell if these chaotic elections can deliver a legitimate leader or if they’ll plunge the country deeper into turmoil.
