The member states of the North Atlantic Alliance extended the mandate of its current Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg by one year until October 1, 2024. It is already the second extension of Stoltenberg’s mandate as the head of NATO.
This former Norwegian Prime Minister has been heading NATO since 2014 as the 13th Secretary General. The member states of the Alliance already agreed last year to extend his mandate by one year in light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“The transatlantic bond between Europe and North America has ensured our freedom and security for 75 years, and in this more dangerous world our alliance is more important than ever,” Stoltenberg wrote in a post on Twitters.
A new suitable candidate could not be found before the NATO summit in Vilnius, which will be held at the beginning of July. Several possible candidates dropped out of the discussion about Stoltenberg’s successor. This was, for example, the Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen or the British Minister of Defense Ben Wallace.
