The U.S. embassy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) celebrated the groundbreaking of the new embassy building in the capital, Kinshasa. The event, which took place at the proposed site of the new embassy building, was attended by the U.S. ambassador to the DRC, Ambassador Lucy Tamlyn. At the event were representatives from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO), the U.S. Mission to the DRC, and DRC officials.
The construction of the new embassy building will create about 1,600 jobs for the locals. More so, it is expected to boost the DRC economy to the tune of about $170 million. The U.S. government will locally procure materials, instruments, and labor for the project. In recent times, the DRC has benefited from a massive investment from the U.S. since the project began.
Between April and August 2023, the U.S. government spent close to $1.4 million on the construction of the new embassy building, with most of it budgeted for the local procurement of nails, sand, cement, and other materials needed.
The construction of the new embassy building is expected to foster a stronger relationship between the U.S. and the DRC and essentially help in sustaining and deepening mutual values and economic development.
