A 25-year-old US Airman, Aaron Bushnell, from San Antonio, Texas, tragically passed away on Monday after succumbing to injuries sustained from self-immolation outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, Bushnell set himself on fire in an apparent act of protest against the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
US media reports indicate that he live-streamed the act on the social media platform Twitch, expressing his opposition to the violence before dousing himself in liquid and setting himself alight. The footage, which included him shouting “Free Palestine!” was later removed from the platform.
The US Air Force confirmed Bushnell’s passing in a statement, expressing their condolences and stating they would provide further details after notifying his next of kin.
This incident follows a similar act of self-immolation in December 2023, when a protester set themselves on fire outside the Israeli Consulate in Atlanta. It is understood that this act was also intended as a form of extreme political protest against the situation in Gaza.
On October 7, Hamas masterminded an attack on Israel, leading to a swift response. Israel has, since its first strike in Gaza, killed over a thousand people.
The attack on Hamas has continued despite global outrage against Israel and the debilitating humanitarian situation in Gaza.
